Android Developer Challenge: 2020
Android Developer Challenge 2020:
Helpful Innovation & creative pivoting in the face of a pandemic.
The theme for the Android Developer Challenge 2020 was “Helpful Innovation” powered by on-device Machine learning’. The goal was to encourage the Android developer community to create projects using MLKit and Tensorflow Lite.
I acted as the campaign lead Producer, overseeing the project through pivot in creative strategy ude to the Covid-19 Pandemic. My role included: project management of UX/UI workshop for the 10 winning app developer teams, spanning a 3month development period. With a UX wireframes, advice and UI designs for the apps as well as logos, branding and Play Store marketing design collateral.
Creation of a microsite page on develoepr.android.com and an illustrated collectible ‘Zine with artwork by 10 Illustrators, article content edited by tech journalist editor Arielle Bier. And film content featuring two of the winning teams using remote interviews and animation.
ESKE
David Katoh’s “Eskke”, streamlines mobile money management for people in the Congo, letting them transfer money, pay bills, buy subscriptions and essential airtime for sending SMS.
STILA
Yingding Wang’s “Stila” pairs with a wearable device, like the Fitbit wristband or a device running on Wear OS by Google to monitor and track the body’s stress levels. You can better understand and manage stress in your life.

A Pivot to a Printed Collectible ‘Zine
With a prize for the 10 winning teams set to be a showcase of their work at Google IO 2020 - when the global pandemic hit, we had to pivot to a new way to showcase the project and the winning apps to the developer community. We create a collectible Zine featuring creative artwork by 10 different Illustrators, exclusive articles and interviews with Android experts and even a pull-out poster.

My Role & challenges
As lead producer I helped oversee the entire campaign including helping to manager the pivot in direction once the COVID 19 pandemic hit and the initial proposal.
I helped coordinate and project manage the UI/UX workshops for the winning App teams, working with a UX consultant and UI designer - creating a week by week program over the 3month development period for the 10 winning App developer teams.
I helped lead the team in developing new ways of working, creating a remote workflow for filming interviews, sending filming & audio equipment, briefing contributors, running interviews and retrieving footage.
I helped develop the creative behind the collectible ‘Zine as an alternative to Google IO as a means of exposure for the winners and the project within the Developer Community.
I oversaw production of the ‘Zine including project management of the copywriters, editorial creative decisions as well as illustration, design, print production, and global shipping.

Machine learning and AI is at the heart of Android, and that is true whether you think about a future that is really transformational, like live caption …or something as simple as smart reply… with ML Kit and other investments we're making, our goal is to enable the entire developer ecosystem to bring those types of innovation to life.
